Advisory Board
The NIHR Open Research Advisory Board is the editorial board and governing body of NIHR Open Research. This is because the open research publishing model doesn’t have academic editors handling articles or making decisions on accepting or rejecting an article. Instead, all editorial work is undertaken by the in-house editorial team who ensure authors adhere to the author guidelines, ethical and editorial policies and data policies. Peer reviewers are suggested by the in-house peer review team following reviewer guidelines and criteria, and all reviews are published openly on the platform alongside each article. If there are any editorial issues, the editorial team follow decision making workflows that align with the guidance of COPE (which NIHR Open Research is a member of). In these instances, the in-house editorial team liaises with the Advisory Board to identify an expert in the community to resolve issues of misconduct and complex content.
The Advisory Board consists of advisors who have an interest in open access and improving the way research findings are disseminated. NIHR is the health research system of the NHS in the UK and the members of the board include NIHR staff and researchers that cover a wide range of subjects published on the platform (e.g. public health, clinical evaluation, health services, social care, research data etc) and public contributors. The Board seeks to capture varied views from the research community and attract a diverse community from a broad range of cultures, ethnicities, and beliefs. Several advisors are at an early stage of their career to reflect their important viewpoints.
The main roles of the Advisory Board are to: encourage and support NIHR funded researchers to achieve full publication of their research; provide advice on the strategic direction of the platform; and provide advice on editorial and ethical issues including disputes between the Editorial team and Authors.
